Glasgow band WHITE played the QMU, as part of their first headline UK tour on Saturday night. I wasn’t sure what to expect after hearing mixed reviews from friends. The only thing I was sure of upon my arrival was that I felt like I was on the set of “Nathan Barley“. This was down to the crowd being filled with every hipster in Glasgow, of which the satire of “Nathan Barley” was clearly lost on.
The band strutted on stage to a rapturous applause from the crowd and broke into their set. The crowd at the front clearly loving life, well it was a Saturday night gig in Glasgow after all. Throughout the gig I felt that the band lacked a real passion for what they were doing and looked liked they were trying too hard to be cool, rather than just enjoying themselves and the music.
The only thing I could take from the gig is that as much as the band look good, that is really it. They have the look but lack the substance that makes then a band. Their songs sort of just went along and I wasn’t overawed. The hype that they are creating is a bit mystifying, as their music is the thing that is lacking. Which probably sums up why the crowd was the way it was. WHITE as performers were good but as musicians, they lack something.
